I finally saw the people up the road who are installing double glazing in their renovation. For the whole house including doors they are only paying $15,000. He couldn't tell me the area of glazing. Windows are awning style with timber frames. He used a local company here in the south in Kingston. Good luck 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Local double-glazing supplier 44Jul 30, 2008 10:34 am This morn I got the quote from the Polish supplier, for the windows with stiffer uPVC extrusions and safety glass as required by the Aussie standards. It comes up to approx $A10,000, for 45m2 of windows/doors. With another 4000 for shipping, customs, taxes and installation it's just within our budget. I'm planning to visit a couple of local outfits tomorrow, to get their quotes for comparison and to pick up as much info about these windows and their installation as possible. Mostly among a few Aussie copanies and I must say EcoClassic was by far the most affordable, they also gave us good customer service with all the enquiries.
Unfortunately the house in it's entirety was stretching the budget as is so we opted not to do double glazing after all. Here is a thread that Eco posted some time ago, gives an idea of pricing for a average 30sq house... http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=2375 I'd give them a call by phone, you never know you email could have been lost as spam. Besides they are nice and friendly to talk with http://www.ecoclassic.com.au/contact.htm Re: Local double-glazing supplier 47Jul 31, 2008 2:22 pm Quote: I must say EcoClassic was by far the most affordable Chris My father rode a camel, I drive a car, my son flies in a jetliner, his son will ride a camel.Saudi saying Re: Local double-glazing supplier 49Aug 05, 2008 11:31 am Yes I did speak to the rep at the time, and he was shutting up shop so to speak but didn't give me any reasons.
I don't think we got to the stage of looking at shipping costs though, certainly would want to be insured too. Either way I wouldn't have purchased sight unseen which would have also meant a flight to Melbourne prior to purchasing. Re: Local double-glazing supplier 50Aug 05, 2008 11:43 am Hi Pebbles and everybody,
I just got another lead, and it's here in the West. I talked to the lady, who's started shipping the uPVC windows from the UK. She claims that the windows she gets have been tested and certified for all Aussie standards and that the prices she offers are 30% less than the ones quoted by the other Perth's windows supplier. She told me that she's getting quite a few orders. At the very least the competition will force the prices down. The e-mail address is info@thermaledgewindows.com.au. Disclaimer: I'm neither advertising, nor endorsing this outfit, just passing on the info. Unfortunately as things stand, with PVC windows going to the tiny group of buyers and the monopolistic or cartel suppliers, buying sight unseen is unavoidable if someone wants to beat price gouging. I have been reading your comments on double-glazed windows and agree with a lot that has been said. A number of my friends have been trying to get double-glazed windows here in WA and found all the problems of prices. They asking me for years to start importing them as I already import equipment for most European countries for my business. I have recently imported a number of windows from Poland and they are extremely good and are filled with Argon gas as opposed to air-filled which was offered to them here. They also sent me a couple of small samples which I still have. Re: Local double-glazing supplier 52Aug 08, 2008 10:49 am So James, what is your point, are you starting a new business???
If so you can see you might have quite a few customers here but look into all the detail that Chris has mentioned, insurance, guarantee and all that stuff. Let us know ..... Maggie Re: Local double-glazing supplier 53Aug 09, 2008 11:04 am OK, here's the latest on the windows import: I've managed to put together a spec including all Aussie standards requirements and shipping constraints. In my plans there're 3 very large windows/french doors 2.5m tall and up to 3m wide. They woudn't fit in the container, so will have to be divided and then re-assembled. I've added some fancy touches, like the floor lever controlled hopper windows under the ceiling, mozzie nets, etc. I've bounced all that off the prospective windows suppliers in Poland. It whittled 3 down to 1. Safety glass, stiffer profiles and the fancy stuff racked up the price considerably. On top of that, the Polish currency appreciated 5% in the last 6 weeks (why it always has to happen to me ?! I head overseas, or try to buy something there and the currency there soars, while the Aussie dollar tanks. Maybe I should use this for currency speculation ? ). Anyway, the costs have risen considerably because of all that and are creeping up towards 50% of the price quoted by the local gougers and ever closer to my limit, which is twice the price of Aussie single glazed aluminium crudes. I've sourced another producer though and am waiting for their quote.

How does the dividing and re-assembling work. We have a lot of large windows, our largest being about 3.8m x 2.4m....a single pane of glass. Is this too big to put in a container? How big are the containers? Thanks. I sent them my window schedule and soon had what, at first glance, seemed to be a very realistic quote. However, I soon realised when I read the details of the quote that they had substituted all the sizes I had given them for their 'standard' sizes. In the small print it stated that non-standard sizes would be +30%. So even though many of my windows were actually smaller than their standard sizes, I would still have to pay 30% more. I can only guess that they are buying in pre-made frames or something. Totally ridiculous. Re: Local double-glazing supplier 59Oct 23, 2008 11:04 am Eco import the total window from China .
This is the main reason for the extra 30% on non std sizes With the decline in the $A against the $US I wonder how long the pricing they offer will hold. Interesting comment from their rep from WA Never argue with an idiot!!!! They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience. Is this the reason for the 10 week lead time I wonder? How do you know this for sure? How come they have a big factory at Hallam? Proof please!
