Browse Forums Eco Living 1 Jun 09, 2016 11:12 pm With the Urban Heat Island Effect and the thermal inefficiency of black roofs well documented, it has always surprised me that heat reflective roof paints have not been mandated on new house builds and dark roof colours banned. Several years ago, students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed phase-change polymer gel-filled roof tiles dubbed Thermeleon tiles that changed colour from light during hot sunny days to dark during cold periods. While commercialisation is yet to happen, this forum's more environmentally aware new home builders should be interested in the technology discussed in the link below. https://phys.org/news/2009-10-color-cha ... inter.html EDITED March 1 2018. Swapped links. This was a very exciting development but there has been no updates for several years now. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. The cumulative effect of dark roofs and dark tinted driveways to create the Urban Heat Island Effect is well documented. I think you've commented on this before on a thread started by someone else. One of my comments in the same thread was in relation to a house not far from us that has all three - charcoal coloured concrete drive and roof plus a dark textured wall cladding. You could nearly fry an egg on that drive on a hot summer day. Personally I don't know why they haven't banned dark roof colours especially seeing as most of us live in such a hot country and with future climate change scenarios already taking place. Unless of course they use a product like this... Stewie Re: Tackling inefficiency & Urban Heat Island Effect 3Jun 10, 2016 12:42 pm I have posted comments about the Urban Heat Island Effect in several threads and I find black roofs and black driveways a permanent testimony to regulatory ignorance and consumer un-awareness. I flew into Melbourne a few years ago and was looking out the window as we approached Tullamarine and all I could see were black roofs, black driveways and little greenery. It looked like environmental death. I don't know the current developmental status of the Thermeleon roof tiles but this product is something that deserves immediate support to finalise developmentment and commercialisation. 3in1 Supadiverta. Re: Tackling inefficiency & Urban Heat Island Effect 4Mar 01, 2018 6:57 am The ABC posted an article today about the Western Sydney Organisation of Councils and their attempts to combat the "heat island" effect. I notice that one of the motivators for the Parramatta council is business activity or rather the threat of losing it - when it heats up people stop going outside, they stop exercising and they stop buying things, which is bad for the economy. Will this argument win the day? http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-03-01/h ... ct/9361156 Re: Tackling inefficiency & Urban Heat Island Effect 6Mar 01, 2018 7:22 pm The outer Western Sydney suburb of Penrith registered 47.3C on January 7 but a news team found 48C outside a school in another suburb. Why do so many people spec black roofs and black driveways? Do they really think that they look good?
