Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Aug 23, 2023 6:46 pm I dominoed all the external architraves so they won't move apart, I want to do the internal architraves with something other then the traditional Shelley's pva and cross nail that the local builder and carpenters do, so any ideas other then using a 4mm domino. It's harder because these are mitred and not a butt join. It's only 11mm DAR pine too. I was thinking PUR but have seen mitre kits with super glue and activator. Anybody have any ideas or input? Re: Architraves 2Aug 23, 2023 8:27 pm If the house is well built and there is no foundation movement your architraves will not come apart. I am not sure why you have problem with traditional fixing. I've built on piers on black soil. Plus timber is a natural product that moves with moisture. If I can keep maintenance to minimum by doing a better joint now that's what I would like. Re: Architraves 4Aug 24, 2023 10:21 am You can use a standard biscuit, because they are thinner than dominos it's probably better suited to your arch's. Another method I saw the other day is to cutl the three arch's to size and make sure they are perfect. Then glue up the mitres using CA glue laying flat in the ground. You have to work fast because once you spray on the activator you only get a couple of seconds to get it right, that's why you do it laying flat on the floor. Once you have glued both mitres you pick up the architraves offer it up and fix it off. It kept the mitres perfect. The other option is to use PU glue. It can be a bit meesy because it slightly foams up as it dries but it's much stronger than typical PVA glue. Biscuits and PU glue would probably give the best of both worlds. It increases the glue area it keeps the mitres flat when installing and gives you time while doing it all. I use the sika PU glue but it needs to be clamped firm. I had a joint move because it was not restrained so that's its limitation I suppose. Have you seen the PUR 3000 type. It looks like the best of both worlds. The cost is up there, but I can use it for my joinery too. I am a fan of pre assembled architraves. It worked brilliantly on the externals. Thanks for the feedback. I already have the doors and architraves installed as pictured. My question is which size n type of skirting would go with the architraves? I originally wanted a winder,… 0 3340 |
