Confortable for many is not comfortable for me. You know when you're driving in a car with a group of people, and one of them refuses to put the window up, meanwhile the others are complaining of the cold? Well, that one is me who wants the window down:) It's 21 outside right now, and I'm sitting on our sundeck. Most people would find that comfortable, but I find it quite warm, just sitting here doing nothing. I think my wife would be fine most of the time without AC even in our 50 year old, no insulation, brick and matchstick house with no weatherstips even. I often think of those guys in the old west taking a bath once a week, no ac, hot as heck in the California sun, and I think Gosh I AM SO LUCKY Of course, need is a relative thing. I don't neeeed it, but I really really really want it:) Hey, if the council let me put up a windmill to generate my own power I would do it. But, they won't. Yes, but Europe's summers are a lot milder than Australia's Jellylegs, we are paying 11.5 K for 5 zone, 8 outlet single phase , single story house, so your quote sounds around the mark. I am happy to pay money to install airconditioning, obviously I am trying to minimise use by other measures - eaves, shutters, insulation etc - but we regularly reach over 40 deg here in summer. I will only use the aircon when neccesary but days like that will be very glad we have it Re: 3 phase or single phase 14Oct 11, 2008 3:20 am Quote: Yes, but Europe's summers are a lot milder than Australia's They say that the winters are a lot colder in Europe, which it's true , but fact is the coldest and most uncomfortable houses I have lived or stayed in during my life were in Victoria and in New Zealand Summers in Europe are mosltly hotter compared to New Zealand and again the houses in NZ are much hotter and uncomfortable in summer If you go to Europe an build a house with the same cardboard, matchstick, brickveneer or wheatherboard and dark roof (which was a fashion there in the 70's) you will find that unbearable hot in summer. You can easily get 35 Celsius in Europe too I have lived long enough on either side of the world to tell that the standard houses in Australia and New Zealand are not build for the local climate. Re: 3 phase or single phase 15Oct 11, 2008 11:20 am When I visited the Solar house in Subiaco (Perth) last year it had a graph of temperatures recorded over the whole year, hanging on the wall. The highest temperature recorded was 28, the lowest 18. The house was a display and had no tenants during that time, so nobody was closing the courtains when the days were hot and opening the windows for the breeze at night. If it had been occupied, the results would be much better. The house was built using passive solar principles, mentioned by Windowexpert, had no airconditioing and no heating.

Chris 28 is too high for me, I would still want A/C. At this stage of the game, not having it will hurt resale value. Sad, but true. Do you know anything about the weather where I'm from? Maybe I should try to grow wings and fly too. I am acclimatized as much as I'm going to get. I came from California that has roughly the same temps and conditions as Sydney. I lived there most of my life, so nothing is going to change on my end. My point in all I've said is that it's fine and dandy for all you eco fanatics to tell me not to put in AC, but some of us are different to you, and we will have things like AC. I am happy to pay for it, and happy to pay for renewable energy sources to power it if and when they become available. I'm not saving the world today, just myself. No more dead horse beating, me included. What was this thread about? 3 Phase:) Yes, get 3 phase:) Greg Re: 3 phase or single phase 19Oct 13, 2008 9:36 pm Gpierce,
Quote: all you eco fanatics to tell me not to put in AC Stuff abour acclimatising was indeed personal, I apologise. I never recommended that you don't put in AC. All I ever said was that in a well designed house it's not necessary for most people. If you like it cold, you can put in a 30kW unit in and your own power plant in your backyard, for all I care.
