We have Titane in Tasmania, but they seem ludicrously expensive and claim to manufacture every window to order - why ? http://titane.com.au/Windows.html I know someone from EcoClassic used to post sometimes on the forum. Their prices seem good. Anyone considering them, or used them ? http://www.ecoclassic.com.au/index.htm Do the hard jobs first. Will contact them again, maybe by phone, when I get all the details of my windows (glazing schedule??) (should be sometime soon). There is an energy efficiency thing happening at the Home Ideas Centre in Hobart this W/E, and I was going to see who was there and what they offer in the way of double glazing. Don't know if you are near Hobart?
I did speak to an energy auditor last week and he said make sure that when you speak to the local suppliers you let them know that you are looking interstate as well, and they may adjust their price.....but it is still so expensive. If you do go down the importing path, let me know how you go. We won't be building until next year . I was wondering about warranties and the like if you imported them. But for the cost of an airline ticket...it could be worth it. Like almost all window sites they're pretty light on data and are curiously reluctant to disclose prices. Seems common to the industry - unlike virtually all other products.

Yeah, I found EcoClassic because a friend told us that you could buy double glazed windows on ebay. Actually that's how I found HomeOne because I googled EcoClasssic and this forum came up (lots of discussion last year about double glazing!!!!) Will definitely go to this expo tomorrow (after we go up to the snow) and see what I can find out and will let you know. Their rep quoted me the equivalent of $A 8000 for their top of the range white windows. For the same house plans Envirovision gave a rough quote of $34,000. These figures speak for themselves!! If I can organise the delivery and get through the wall of beaurocratic paperwork, required to import from Europe, I'll get my windows from Poland. I've been following your thread about buying windows from Poland. DH's parents were from Poland and we lived there for 2 years....so I have suggested to DH that may be we could do something similar....but how does it work with warranties, or did you not worry about that? And are you going to allow for breakages? Are your windows standard shapes and sizes? I'll go and check out that link. Thanks 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Local double-glazing supplier 8Jul 05, 2008 8:53 pm Quote: but how does it work with warranties, or did you not worry about that? BTW had to ask DH what you meant by 'pension', my Polish isn't what it used to be. 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Local double-glazing supplier 10Jul 06, 2008 12:17 am 'chelle,
I'm pretty sure that word "pension" is known in English, but perhaps little used in this meaning, it applies to a cross between boarding-house and a hotel. They're very popular in Poland. This particular one serves such a wonderful full-board food that my missus put on 2 kg in a week and, horrified, cut down to BB routine My father rode a camel, I drive a car, my son flies in a jetliner, his son will ride a camel.Saudi saying Re: Local double-glazing supplier 11Jul 07, 2008 11:50 am Hi Cabinfever,
Well the Energy efficiency Expo was a bit of a waste of time as far as windows go. No-one there to talk to. All I got to see were the displays that are there normally. But here are a few names for you Titane: you already know Certainteed: make uPVC double glazed windows and doors Rylock: had timber/aluminium frames...looked very expensive....available through the Home Ideas Centre in Hobart and Launceston Wide View Windows: a Tasmanian company, Hobart based. Their display said they do double glazing but I can't find much more info on them. Sorry, really not much help, could have got more info just from the Yellow Pages (there are heaps of double glazing suppliers in there...but I have no idea about cost) Someone up the road is doing extensive renovations to their house and installing timber framed dbl glazing...I can check who they used and costs if you are thinking of using timber frames (we're not...I love the look but don't want the maintenance) May be if you let companies know that you are seriously thinking of importing the windows yourself they may come to the party a little with prices. I'm not looking forward to getting prices for our windows as we have roughly 80m2 of glazing and, well you know what they are charging down here. Keep us posted on any pricing you get. 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Local double-glazing supplier 12Jul 07, 2008 1:07 pm Thanks 'chelle, much appreciated.
Titane quoted me something like $4500 for a five-panel bay window, with installation being another $500 or so. Seems outrageous to me when you have people advertising entire house-lots overseas for $10,000. My house would cost something like $40,000 to double-glaze. I'd never see that back either in capital improvement value or savings on heating. So instead I would logically stay with the "heat sinkhole" single-glazed windows and keep the heaters turned up and guzzle the electricity. Seems crazy. I get the feeling that Australians are paying a ridiculous "prestige mark-up" for double glazing when in Europe and the US it's dog-standard and appropriately priced. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Local double-glazing supplier 13Jul 07, 2008 2:10 pm 'Chelle,
That Polish producer, I've posted the link to, offers wood look-alike uPVC frames. Unfortunately the pallette of colours/patterns appears only in the Polish version of their Web page (http://www.oknoplast.com.pl/15?action=show&id=436). I've seen such frames on display and in the people's houses, they look truly timberish, allegedly don't fade and the scratching doesn't show easily. I wasn't really interested in those, the colour scheme for my future house requires white frames (be they aluminium or whatever), but I seem to recollect sales rep saying that they cost 40% more than whites. Assuming that importing them for my project from Poland is feasible, that's still only $A 12,000 plus freight (say $2000), customs (at 5% - say a $1000), GST (10%, say $2000), adding up to $17,000. Half of what the Envirovision quoted for white frames here. With all the fuss about the climate change, someone should take the local suppliers of double glazed windows to the Competition and Consumer Price Commission for price gouging. Thanks. Yes, I have read a lot of his posts, the problem is not finding good windows, but finding them for a reasonable cost. As cabinfever has said, we seem to pay a premium here in Australia for double glazed windows and then the trip over the ditch to Tasmania makes this even worse. Our designer has given us a very rough estimate of $100k for our windows (over 80m2) and if I can get them for the sort of price kristof is talking about (or even half of what our designer has said), well that's a huge saving!!!! When I was there, everywhere seemed to use them. I don't know, but maybe there is a NZ manufacturer that could do a good price. Might be worth a shot as there's nothing to lose. Just a thought, Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Local double-glazing supplier 17Jul 07, 2008 5:34 pm Thanks Jo,
Will have to look into that, from memory I think windowexpert was from NZ, pity he's not around any more. The price includes delivery (but not installation).
For that price I will be getting a proper quote done for all windows in the house when the time comes. www.trendwindows.com.au And no, I don't work for them. I just got told about this forum today and got the price estimate back from Trend today also. We're in the process of getting quotes for all the work we want done... and there's LOTS of it!! Pretty much every room in the house is being changed in one way or another. Re: Local double-glazing supplier 19Jul 07, 2008 6:35 pm Quote: $100k for our windows (over 80m2) Seriously though, with that area of glazing and associated price, it might be cost effective to travel to Europe to watch over production/packing/shipping and then to pay for a couple of installers to come here. Some allegedly have done just that, see http://www.byohouse.com.au/forum4/viewtopic.php?t=711.
